A Kochi based NGO, Centre for Advancement of Global Health, has developed a mobile application to collect data and track down mosquito-borne diseases, especially dengue.

The project was funded by department of science and technology (DST), aiming to help health workers in identifying factors that can lead to diseases transmitted through mosquitos.

It also enables health workers to know about environmental issues that lead to a mosquito borne disease.

The application named Mosapp is part of a larger project initiated to check the dengue outbreak. The project involves foreign experts as well. It also aims at developing geospatial tools using mobile technologies, that enable the common man as well as health experts to identify the hotspots of mosquitos and dengue activity, The Times of India reports.

“It can also be used to conduct sensor-based assessment of microclimate features such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture and ambient light. Students of St Xavier's College Aluva and Cochin College, Fort Kochi, are part of the initiative,” Ajit Babu, director of the NGO told ToI.

He said that highly developed technologies should be used to deal with the health issues now.

“We used the grant from the national resources data management system (NRDMS), DST to develop the app,” he added.
