Medha Patkar joins tribals in asking Kerala govt to fulfil promise made 13 years ago

The News Minute | December 16, 2014| 6.45 pm ISTThe tribals from Kerala who have been agitating for their land for the last 150 days in front of state secretariat have got a new lease of hope after social activist Medha Patkar met concerned state ministers on Monday. Patkar also visited the ongoing stand-up protest site of the tribals.“Today had a very pleasant experience of dialogue with Kerala government on tribals' land rights7,693 hectares of land, forest and agri to adivasis...execution of agreement of 2001 to be taken further. NAPM's mediation, intervention, support in struggle led by C K Janu and Geetanandan..for a cause to bring life and livelihood” Patkar said in her facebook postIn October 2001 the Kerala government had promised to distribute land for farming for the tribal community. The promised package was 0.4 to two hectares of cultivable land as per land availability to all landless tribals in each district. As the government failed to implement the package even after 13 years, they started their protests in July 2014.Patkar held talks with Minister for Tourism and SC/ ST Welfare A P Anil Kumar and Minister for Tribal Welfare P K Jayalakshmi, after which the state government expressed its readiness to address the long pending demands raised by the tribals.The ministers has reportedly, agreed the demands of the tribal community.Tweet
