What happens when a mainstream media organisation that usually takes a stance against social conservatism, itself dons the moral police’s hat? It gets called out for double standards.One of Kerala’s largest media houses, Malayala Manorama is facing an online backlash after it published an article on its website manoramaonline titled ‘Pranaya Sarovaram.’ (pranayam means love).The article on a bio-park named ‘Sarovaram’ in Kozhikode district, which appeared without a byline, lamented that families could no longer spend time there because of lovers indulging in public display of affection. The article said that things were so bad that people had to walk with their eyes closed in the park due to the supposedly increasing number of couples.Not only did the tone of the article irk readers, the picture that accompanied the article angered them even more: A couple hugging in the park had been stealthily photographed, possibly without their permission.The criticism against the newspaper on its website and on Facebook has been so severe that Malayala Manorama was forced to withdraw the article.This article comes just days after another article published by Manorama, supporting police action against school children who had bunked classes to watch a romantic movie.The Kiss of Love movement reacted strongly saying that ‘the reason for moral policing goondaism to rise in the state was because of yellow journalism practiced by some journalists and publications.What’s more, the International Chalu Union hasn’t spared them either.Read- Bengaluru artist puts crocodile on city's pothole, read what happened after
