Late dancer Santhi Mohandas’s children, niece sing a moving tribute to a mother’s love

The sudden death of a mother is an unimaginable experience for any child. But sometimes that sorrow can be transformed into beautiful art that tugs at your heart strings, as the children of dancer Santhi Mohandas have done with the soulful melody Kai Pidichu.

Santhi, a dancer and wife of National Award-winning Malayalam music director Bijibal, passed away unexpectedly on August 29, following a brain haemorrhage. 45 days later, her children Devdath and Daya, and her niece Lola, have composed and performed a sublime melody that sings of the beautiful and magical world a mother opens up for her children.

The song opens with evocative imagery of the journey children take with their mother:

“Holding hands, taking baby steps, a cold rain falls on my mind.
Stars and moon, my mind fills with clear moonlight.
In our dreams, let us fly away  together in the clouds.”

The pain of separation from their mother is beautifully captured in the lines:

“If I am away, I too will sleep along with you
I cry for the warmth of a mother.”

The simple and emotional song has been composed by 13-year-old Devdath, with lyrics written by his cousin Lola, and sung by both of them together with eight-year-old Daya. While Bijibal himself plays  the violin for the song, the children are also accompanied by Sandeep Mohan. The 2.47 minute video has been shot and edited by Jobin Kayanad.
