The Kerala police registered two cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against a male teacher for allegedly sexually abusing a class seven student. A case has also been registered against The Oxford School in Thiruvananthapuram, where the accused taught commerce, for not informing the police about the incident.

The alleged abuse happened six months ago and it was recently that the student spoke about it to a nurse who works in the school clinic. On January 20, the nurse informed the school authorities, but they did not notify the police. Later, on January 24, one of the student’s relatives informed the police, following which a First Information Report was registered.

According to the Fort police in Thiruvananthapuram, the school conducted an internal inquiry and suspended the teacher, identified as Arun Mohan, a native of Vattiyoorkavu.

Arun Mohan has been booked under Sections 7 (sexual assault) and 8 (Punishment for sexual assault) of the POCSO Act. The school has been booked under Section 19 (not reporting sexual offence against child to police) of the POCSO Act.
