Kerala man shot dead by father after quarrel over latter's drinking

A 29-year-old man who was undergoing treatment after his father shot him at their house in Suryanelli of Idukki district died on Tuesday evening. 

Binu was shot using a gun without a license by his father Achankunju (55) on Saturday night. Police said that the father-son duo fought regularly, as Binu had a problem with his father's drinking.  On Sunday, Achankunju fired at his son after Binu tried to stop his inebriated father from attacking his sister-in-law. 

“A few weeks ago Binu’s brother Anu had married. Achankunju did not like Anu’s wife and would create problems every day after drinking. On Saturday night, Achankunju shouted at everyone in the house and also tried to attack Anu’s wife. Binu tried to stop his father. Following which the father took a knife from the kitchen and tried to stab Binu. But since his wife managed to take away the knife from him he went inside took the gun and shot at Binu. He was shot in his stomach,” Vinod Kumar, station house officer at Santhanpara police station, told TNM.

He also said that the charges against Achankunju will be revised from IPC 307 to IPC 302 (murder).

Binu was a taxi driver and he was under treatment in a private hospital in Kochi.
