Kerala cops take Hindi lessons to deal with migrant labourers

Written by : TNM Staff
With more than 25 lakh of migrant labourers in the state, Kerala police, without basic knowledge of Hindi finds it difficult to deal with even as Home department has claimed that crime involving migrant labourers has increased considerably.

The Timesof India reports that, even though the department has not announced any official move to provide language training, the cops have taken it upon themselves to learn Hindi.

The report says that cops from the outskirts of the city were forced to take Hindi lessons as migrant labourers are concentrated in those areas.

“About six months ago, a professor from Bharath Mata College would come to station and take Hindi lessons on Tuesdays and Fridays. The classes were held between 7 and 8am. The professor did not charge any fees,” a Sub Inspector from Ernakulam district told TOI.

Other police officers also agreed that the department has been taking unofficial Hindi lessons.
