A case has been registered against a civil police officer who was suspended for hurling a baton at a moving bike during a vehicle check and injuring the rider.

The accused, identified as Chandramohan, allegedly hurled a baton at a moving bike, when the rider, who was not wearing a helmet, refused to stop at the vehicle check in Kadakkal Kollam on Friday. The baton hit the bike which led to the two-wheeler crashing into another car and injuring the rider, identified as Siddique (19).

After a detailed inquiry led by the Punalur DYSP, the officer has been booked under IPC sections 336 (causing hurt by act endangering life and personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life and personal safety of others). If convicted, section 336 could attract a punishment of 3 months jail term and Rs 250 fine or both while section 337 could attract a 6-month jail term and Rs 500 fine.

Based on the inquiry report, two other officers —  ASI Shibulal and a civil police officer Siraj from the AR camp — who were part of the police checks, have also been placed under suspension.

The victim was rushed to the Kadakkal Taluk Hospital to treat the injuries on his forehead and right hand. He was later moved to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

According to reports, his condition is now stable and the doctors will further conduct advanced tests to ascertain if the injuries on his face will impair his vision.

Chandramohan’s arrest will be recorded after the police takes a statement from Siddique, according to reports.

The police have also stated that they will look into the CCTV footage from the police vehicles present during the check to collect further evidence in the case.
