The News Minute | March 3, 2015 | 6.40 pm ISTKerala’s liquor bar issue has taken a new turn with state Congress President VM Sudheeran saying the High Court has crossed its limits.Sudheeran's reaction comes a day after the High Court on Monday condemned Sudheeran's circular to the party-ruled local bodies, asking them not to grant No Objection Certificate (NOC) for liquor bars.HC observed that Sudheeran’s move was illegal and an extra-constitutional intervention. However now, Sudheeran, the man responsible for Kerala’s anti liquor policies, has reacted to the HC’s observation, stating that the court has crossed the limits.“I completely disagree with the High Court. Congress committee did not get a chance to explain our side in the court. This is injustice and HC has crossed the limits,” he told media. He added that 'the court’s remarks indicate denial of natural justice.’ The division bench comprising Justice Antony Dominic and Alexander Thomas had observed that the Congress state president was acting as if he was above the Constitution. With this high court order, several hotels in Congress-ruled local bodies would start operating bars. After he assumed office as the party state president last year, Sudheeran had issued a circular to all Congress-led, UDF-ruled local governing bodies not to give no objection certificate (NOC) to hotels to run bars.High Court has come up with the recent observation while considering appeals related to granting NOC for a bar at Hotel Crown Plaza in the city and HC also ordered local governing body to grant NOC to the hotel within two weeks.Tweet
