A conversation released on Friday reportedly reveals that cricketer Kapil Dev could not start his dream project of a medical township in Kochi because he was not ready to pay bribe to a local CPIM leader.Manorama News released an audio conversation in which CPI Ernakulam district committee member E M Sunil Kumar apparently tells another person that the CPM’s local secretary had asked for a share of profit from the project and that this was the reason why Kapil Dev was forced to drop the project.Kapil Dev, in cooperation with the Kerala government, had planned to start a massive project in Kochi which would have Allopathic and Ayurvedic hospitals, Medical Convention Centers, Medical Research Centers, Medical College, Dental College, and Para Medical College in one campus by 2011.The project was planned to be built at Varappuzha in Kochi. CPM workers had then staged a protest against the project as it was a multinational one. They selected this particular site as the venue for their all Kerala land reformation protest.The project was later dropped. In the leaked audio Sunil Kumar revealed that the local committee member asked for a bribe and the company owned by Dev was reluctant, and as a result the party started the protest.However, Sunil Kumar has denied the allegations against him and told The News Minute that the media was manipulating facts.“No, it is not the truth; nothing like that has happened. You cook up stories. I don’t have anything else to say,” he said.
