Jisha rape and murder: Maneka Gandhi alleged lapses in probe, political interference

Written by : TNM Staff

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said on Tuesday that there are serious lapses in the investigation of the rape and murder of 30-year-old Dalit student Jisha in Perumbavoor.

According to reports, a fact-finding National Women's Commission (NCW)  team that visited Kerala to oversee the probe submitted its report to the Union Home Ministry which said that the Kerala Police had ‘deliberately bungled’ the due process of investigation.

Speaking at a press meet in New Delhi, Maneka Gandhi quoted from the report and said, “Even after the victim had complained to the police about a neighbour who threatened her, the police did not act.”

She also alleged that the police acted under political influence and that the investigation was delayed due to assembly election in the state.

The report further mentioned that the crime scene was not sealed for ten days and that post-mortem was not video recorded.
