The News Minute| June 9, 2014| 11.50 am ISTAs nurses from India were stranded in Iraq, many back home asked why the nurses chose to go to Iraq in the first place. Some accused them of pursuing a ‘rich career’; others called them ‘plain greedy’. That however is not the real story. Each one of those nurses ended up in Iraq to re-build their families. With most of them having taken educational loans, the burden of re-payment literally drove them away to Iraq.Kochipost, a news portal based out of Kerala has chronicled the stories of some of these nurses. Twenty seven year old Shalini from Patthanamthitta district has narrated how she paid close to 2 lakh to an agent to travel to Iraq in February this year, but returned dejected as the Iraqi government had not paid their three month salaries.
