The distribution of Rs 10,000 to those who had been affected by the floods will be completed in a week, Additional Chief Secretary PH Kurien told the media.

Speaking to reporters in Kochi on Sunday, he said that the amount is being distributed from the donations received by the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Revenue officials are identifying people who were affected by floods and the money is being given to them, he said.

According to news reports, the financial assistance is for the people whose houses were inundated and those who have lost household equipment. Data collection for eligible people is in progress in the state and the delay is due to the time involved in verifying the collected data.

PH Kurien also said that special camps, community halls and foster homes are being opened to accommodate people who lost their homes to floods. He also said that a survey of the houses in the areas affected by landslips can be done only after studying the soil there.

He added that the government is planning to build houses for those who had lost them and the criteria for this is being fixed.

Adding that the relief packet distribution would be completed in two days, he said that the departmental workers and officers were working even on holidays to complete the task.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had announced Rs 10,000 as immediate assistance to people who were affected by floods and were in the relief camps across the state. He had said that the amount will be transferred to the bank accounts of the people who register themselves in the relief camps by providing details of their bank accounts. He had also said that Rs 242.73 crores have been allocated from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to provide money to 3,91,494 families.
