EC seeks reply from Kozhikode DCC President KC Abu for violation of model code of conduct

Written by : PTI

The Election Commission on Friday sought an explanation from Kozhikode DCC President K C Abu for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

Abu had while addressing a UDF convention at Cheruvanoor in Beypore on April 7 made certain remarks which went against the commission's directions that votes should not be cavassed on the basis of religion.

The commission directed Abu to file his explanation by 5 PM on Saturday, failing which it would launch further proceedings against him.

While addressing the convention, Abu had said that if the UDF candidate Adam Mulsi was elected from Beypore, it would mean a Muslim MLA and a Muslim mayor.

Kozhikode mayor V K C Mammed Koya is the LDF candidate in the constituency and, if defeated, he will continue as mayor.

The BJP candidate in Beypore constituency, K P Prakash Babu had filed a complaint with the EC and police against Abu.

BJP had alleged that the DCC president was trying to whip up communal passion to create polarisation and to fetch votes for the Congress.
