After 2 years of complete eradication of Diphtheria through vaccination in Kerala, the disease has been detected yet again on Wednesday at Malappuram district.

 

A 12 year boy, who was residing at a hostel of Vettathur Arabic College, has been diagnosed with diphtheria. Another student of same district has also been admitted in Kozhikode Medical College with similar symptoms.

 

Asianet News reports that Health department has already started thorough check-ups in the hostels where these infected boys were staying, as the disease spreads through air.

 

The report says that the medicine for this disease is not available in the state and it has to be brought from Delhi.

 

Earlier one student of Vettathur Arabic College had died of throat infection and health officials now doubt that it could have been diphtheria.

 

It was in 2011 the disease was identified in Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram districts and later Health department had claimed that that diphtheria has been eradicated completely.
