55 days after the death of an 88-year-old woman, her buried body was found missing from the cemetery on Sunday.

People found one of the tombs open, and coffins lying outside at Thalavoor St Mary’s Orthodox Church, near Pathanapuram on Sunday.

Later it was found that the tomb belonged to Kunjeli Kunjappy, who died 55 days ago.

Kunnicode police has launched an investigation.

When searched, locals found the body tied inside a sack near Kunjeli’s house, later police revealed that her mentally challenged son Thankachan had done this.

“Kunjeli was buried on March 28. Her son Thankachan might have dug up the grave on Saturday night. Since he has some mental illness we had suspected him. He told us he thought his mother was alive. He was depressed after his mother’s death. When we questioned, him he said, he wanted to live with his mother. The body had decomposed. We have registered a case against showing disrespect to the dead body based on a complaint filed by church authorities,” Maneesh Lal Kunnicode Sub Inspector told The News Minute.

Thankachan was later released on bail.

Earlier last week in Pathanapuram police had found remains of a human body on the top of a building. The remains were burnt. So, police were looking into a connection between the recent events and the earlier incident.

Though police found that the burnt remains were of a man, no more details were available.
