The Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly on Tuesday staged a walkout after the Speaker denied permission for an adjournment motion to discuss the controversial arrest of the Dalit sisters in Kannurearlier this month.

The notice asking for an adjournment motion was given by Opposition MLA KC Joseph who alleged that the state Chief Minister’s deplorably irresponsible stance, lapses on the part of the police and the reported refusal of the Magistrate to even consider the bail petition were pressing issues that ought to be discussed in the Assembly.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan was however in no mood to back down from the government’s stance that the issue was not relevant enough to qualify for an adjournment motion and the Opposition was merely trying to politicize the whole incident. He reiterated that the SC/ST communities in the state would face no insecurities of any kind under the Left regime.

Further commenting on the matter, Pinarayi informed the House that when the case was registered against the sisters, they had themselves come to the police station to surrender and when the arrest was made, the toddler was not present.

The Chief Minister also questioned Joseph's moral right to rake up the issue as he was someone who had once called a Kerala High Court judge a ‘blue fox’ and in the light of many similar instances that had occurred earlier, it would only be proper on Joseph's part -Pinarayi reiterated- to withdraw his needless censure of the government.

Meanwhile the lone BJP member of the House, O Rajagopal too staged a walkout from the Assembly, saying that he found the Chief Minister’s reply unsatisfactory when questioned about the troubled environment that was being created in the villages of Kannur by the violent politics indulged by the CPI(M) in the area.
