CPI (M) leader and accused in the murder of Popular Front of India (PFI) activist Mohammed Fazal, Karayi Rajan, has resigned from his post as Kannur District Panchayat President.

There were reports earlier that Karayi Rajan and Karayi Chandrashekharan, known as Karayi brothers, are likely to be removed from their positions by the party as the Kerala High Court had earlier rejected their petition to temporarily dismiss the CBI's restriction on them from entering Kannur district until the case was over.

Though Kerala High Court had granted the brothers permission to file nominations, the HC rejected their petition to enter their panchayat and municipality to take care of the administration.

Since head of the both local bodies were not present in the district, officials had to travel to Ernakulam district to sign files. Congress party has been protesting against it for a while.
