The state secretariat meeting of the CPI (M) on Friday came down heavily on the government for not performing up to expectations. The party is heading the ruling Left Democratic Front coalition in the state.

The secretariat meeting of the CPI (M) was called specifically to review the performance of the government reports The Times of India. The government has completed ten months in office on Saturday.  

Party General secretary Sitaram Yechury emphasised on the need for teamwork. Questions were also raised for not giving importance to the promises made in the election manifesto. According to reports, criticism was severe on Home and Vigilance Departments, handled by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The lapses of the police in investigating atrocities on women and controversial cases and allegations against top brass like Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau head Jacob Thomas and IG Manoj Abraham has affected the goodwill of the government. Some of the leaders even suggested a change in leadership in both state police and the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB).

The failure of the government in checking the price rise of essential commodities including rice also invited attention at the party’s meeting. The public criticism made by leaders of CPI - the second largest party in the coalition - was flayed by some leaders as it triggered an attack on the government by opponents.Yechury also pointed out the need to change the style of functioning. In a press conference, the party general secretary said that lapses, if any, in the functioning of the government, would be corrected.

The state committee meeting to be held on Saturday and Sunday is likely to carry forward the discussion. Polit Bureau members Prakash Karat and S Ramachandran are attending the meeting.
