The seven-member committee constituted to enquire on complaints of harassment inside Calicut University campus by the girl students found that the concerns raised by students were genuine. The committee comprises various department heads of the university.

The committee submitted has submitted a 24-page report to the vice-chancellor K Mohammed Basheer on Monday.

According to The Times of India report, committee chairman and philosophy department head K Gopinathan have said that infrastructure failure and unrestricted public access to the campus, were the main reasons for this flaw.

 “We have stated that girl students are entitled to the same level of freedom enjoyed by boys on the campus. We have also recommended that the efforts to improve the safety of girl stu dents should not be curtailing their freedom in any way,“ a committee member told ToI.

The committee was constituted after 500 girl students of the university wrote a memorandum to to Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and Governor P Sathasivam, who is also the Chancellor of the University, seeking action against mental and physical harassment they face inside the campus from some boy students in particular departments and outsiders.

The committee has recommended the university to impose strict restrictions on entry of public to the university campus. “The unregulated entry of public to varsity campus should be stopped and necessary restrictions should be put in place,“ the member added.

As per ToI report it also recommended to build a campus wall and enable proper lighting facility inside the campus.
