The News Minute | October 18, 2014 | 11:40 am ISTInformation obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) application on Wednesday states that nearly 1000 police personnel in Kerala are accused in criminal cases, ranging from murder to cheating. Though the list was demanded by MLAs in the assembly the Home Minister was not ready to reveal it. In 2012, the number of people in police department with criminal cases on them was 533 and it almost doubled within two years.The senior most rank with a criminal record is Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), followed by Inspector Generals (IG) and Deputy Superintend of Police (DYSP). Most of the accused are in service while some are undergoing suspension. The report of monitoring committee appointed by the High Court to evaluate the cases against cops has also been released by the Home Ministry.The High Court had directed the Home Department to take steps to prevent the appointment of those with criminal background in the police force. But the alarming increase in the number of case against those in the department proves that the HC's directions are not implemented.Usually, the police department does not disclose such lists even under the Right to Information Act. But in 2012, Kerala Congress leader Joseph M Puthussery moved the high court seeking a direction to the police to disclose the report, and since then such data can be revealed through RTI.
