CPI(M) leader Karayi Chandrashekharan who is an accused in the murder of Popular Front of India (PFI) activist Mohammed Fazal, on Thursday resigned as the chairman of Thalassery municipality.

Chandrasekaran decided to resign as the High Court refused to relax the bail conditions for him. He got special permission from court to enter Kannur district and submit the resignation.

There were reports earlier that Karayi Chandrashekharan along with Karayi Rajan who is also a CPI(M) member, known as Karayi brothers, are likely to be removed from their positions by the party.

The Kerala High Court had earlier rejected their petition to temporarily dismiss the CBI's restriction on them from entering Kannur district until the case was over.
