Abhimanyu murder case: Police arrest prime accused Mohammad

Written by : TNM Staff

The Kerala police on Wednesday arrested Mohammed, the prime accused in the murder of Abhimanyu, the 19-year-old Students Federation of India (SFI) leader.

News18 reports that the prime accused was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday morning.

According to a report by Asianet news, police claim that Mohammed, who is the president of the Maharajas college unit of the Campus Front of India (CFI), has been identified as the mastermind behind the murder.

The arrest comes two weeks after Abhimanyu, a second-year BSc Chemistry student, was killed inside the Maharaja college campus on July 1. Abhimanyu was allegedly stabbed in the heart by SDPI and CFI members. This was after an argument over which group gets to paint a wall to welcome the new batch of students.

The police had claimed that there were at least 15 members in the mob that attacked Abhimanyu and that it was Mohammed who stabbed him to death.

The police on Sunday had also nabbed Adhil, a CFI district committee member, in connection with the case. According to the SIT probing the case, Adhil was directly involved in executing the crime.

Earlier this week, the police conducted a massive crackdown on SDPI workers, reportedly detaining several people across the state. The police had also questioned two SDPI workers – Riyas and Niyas – who were earlier acquitted in Professor TJ Joseph's hand-chopping case.
