In a tragic accident, two sailors of the Southern Naval Command in Kochi died after a helicopter hangar door collapsed on them on Thursday morning. The two deceased, whose names are yet to be announced by the SNC, were aviation technicians at INS Garuda, the Naval air station of the Southern Naval Command in Kochi.

Speaking to TNM, the Naval command’s PRO said, “Aircraft and helicopters are parked in a hangar at the Southern Naval Command headquarters. The hangar has huge metal sliding doors. The incident took place around 10:30 am on Thursday. The two deceased were standing near the hangar when the door collapsed and fell on them. The Naval Command will announce their names soon after their families have been informed.”

The sailors were taken to hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead.

According to reports, the two deceased have been identified as Naveen and Ajith, staff of INS Garuda. To reduce the risk of accidents, the Indian Navy had planned to introduce a new full-time post of Inspector General of Safety that will ensure safe operations at sea and even at naval bases, according to HT.
