The News Minute | September 23, 2014 | 09:11 am ISTHere is another challenge following in the footsteps of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge- the Bamboo Bucket Challenge. The initiative of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy and Development (MGIRED) and Centre for Green Building Materials and Technology (CGBMT), challenges each person to plant a bamboo sapling and then nominate two others to take up the challenge, states a report by Bangalore Mirror. The challenge, that hopes to go viral, is an attempt to revive the use and availability of bamboo products, which are currently being replaced by plastic and concrete. On September 18, fifteen people took up the challenge to mark the World Bamboo Day. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing grasses, which does not need nutrients and can yield 20 times more timber than other trees. A bamboo grove also releases 35 per cent more oxygen into the air than other similar sized groves, adds Bangalore Mirror.
