On Thursday afternoon, a 27-year-old woman walked into her grandparents’ house in Mysuru and demanded money. She did not throw a tantrum or yell when they refused, she went straight up and set her grandparents’ room on fire.

The incident took place in Lakshmikantha Nagar located in Mysuru City’s Hebbala area.

According to the police, the grandparents have not filed a complaint yet. Media reports said that the girl was allegedly addicted to drugs and her grandparents had repeatedly advised to quit. “Her grandparents also did not approve of her going out late at night and bringing boys home after the arties,” police added.

The girl has been living with her grandparents for the past two years after her mother committed suicide following a divorce. “On Thursday afternoon, she demanded money and warned her grandparents to stop interfering in her life and threatened to beat them up and set them on fire. She initially assaulted them and later set the swing, in which they were seated, on fire. The fire soon spread across the entire house,” said DCP HT Shekar.

The neighbours alerted the police and called the firefighters, who arrived in time and doused the flames. Both the elderly persons are out of danger

The girl is currently missing but the police plan to find her and question her although her grandparents have not lodged a complaint.

“We have no confirmation if she was addicted to drugs. But the neighbours told the police that she was addicted to smoking and drinking. Her grandparents told us that she has been disturbed since her mother’s death,” police added.
