Udupi: Man assaulted allegedly for being with woman of different community

The News Minute | June 12, 2014 | 2.39 pm ISTIn a suspected case of vigilantism, a 29-year-old man was assaulted on Tuesday by a group of people in Udupi district allegedly for being with a woman of a different community.Sudhir Rane of Karkala town, was assaulted by a group of people at the woman’s house in Kavadoor, within Karkala town limits on Tuesday. Police confirmed that she was not a minor.The FIR was filed that afternoon, under Sections 143, 147, 148 (rioting), 341 (wrongful restraint), 326 (assault with weapons), 342 (wrongful confinement), 355 (assault with intent to dishonour a person), 307 (attempt to murder) and 395 (dacoity) read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the India Penal Code. On Wednesday, six people were arrested by the police in connection with the assault. Maqbool, Asif, Althaf, Dawood, Kishore, and Ibrahim are in judicial custody and the police are on the look out for seven more peopleSuperintendent of Police Boralingaiah M B told The News Minute that “swift action” had been taken in the case and that it was a “sensitive issue” because of the “communal tinge”. He said that in the last 3-4 months, this was the first such case being reported in the district. According to police, at present the involvement of any groups is not suspected.There are unconfirmed reports about a Muslim youth from Vitla in the neighbouring Dakshina Kannada district assaulted in Udupi district the week before the present incident occurred. However, the young man is reportedly unwilling to speak out as he fears repercussions.
