The residents of many areas in Bengaluru that were severely inundated due to rains and poor drainage system last week are still in the process of recovering from the damage.
Even as a larger discussion over drainage system in the city has been initiated, a new survey indicates that the drain encroachment could be more severe than what it seemed to be.
The Times of India reports that the survey prepared by Bengaulru Urban district administration has estimated the encroachments to be 7 times higher than BBMP estimate and has warned against a likely flooding in the future.
According to the survey that began in 2011, more than 14,000 storm water drains (SWD) have been encroached upon, as opposed to 1923 illegal structures on 842 km of SWDs of BBMP's jurisdiction. The report quotes a survey and settlement department official as saying that the width of drains at many places have been drastically shrunk.
The officer also pointed out that the direction of the drain has itself been changed at some places.
