The News Minute | March 27, 2015 | 10.53 am ISTThe state government has introduced two bills in the ongoing Assembly session to make Kannada the medium of instruction for certain classes.According to a report in The Times of India, the Supreme Court had dismissed the state government’s curative petition on its 1994 language policy three days ago.The court had earlier told the Karnataka government that it could not impose the medium of instruction on students and that parents had a right to decide the medium of instruction for their children.The state government introduced two bills in the Assembly on Thursday, and if both houses pass the bill, schools will have to follow a new language policy. The Kannada Language Learning Bill 2015 seeks to make Kannada a compulsory subject up to class 10 in all schools affiliated to the state board, while an amendment to the RTE Act would make Kannada the medium of instruction for classes 1 to 5 will be Kannada. If the bills are passed, even private schools will have to change the medium of instruction to Kannada and English could be the medium of instruction only after class 5.
