Six college students were arrested on Sunday for eve-teasing a national-level swimmer in Mathikere, reported Deccan Herald. All the arrested students belong to influential families and study in reputed colleges of the city. The suspects have been identified as Nitin, Nawaz, Sanath, George, Sanjay and Bishop. They were arrested after the victim filed a complaint with the Yeshwantpur police, said the report.“We have booked the six under IPC Sections 34 (assault or criminal force against woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) based on a complaint filed by the victim,” a top police officer was quoted by Deccan Herald. It all began when the victim was returning from her coach’s birthday party in the early hours of the morning. The six suspects, who live on the same street as the victim, had gathered at Nitin’s residence, right opposite the woman’s house. As she alighted from the autorickshaw, the men called out to her as, “Hey Baby! How are you?” The woman objected to this behaviour which led to a heated argument. Hearing the commotion some local residents gathered and they tried settling the issue. When the police arrived the suspects blamed the woman for initiating the argument by abusing them and refused to have eve teased her. Following this the victim lodged a complaint leading to their arrest.
