Panic gripped Bengaluru’s Indiranagar on Sunday, February 9, after social media messages claimed that a serial killer was on the loose, attacking multiple people. However, the police dismissed the rumors clarifying that the incident involved a rowdy sheeter, not a serial killer.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East, D Devaraja, confirmed that the accused had attacked four people with a knife on the night of February 8. According to the police, the assailant was in a drunken state when he got into an altercation with his family before turning violent and injuring four individuals. He then fled the scene.

Police confirmed that the accused has a history of petty theft and multiple cases registered against him.

Indian laws do not specifically define who a serial killer is, though it is broadly understood as homicides of more than two or three people by a single individual. The victims are usually unknown to the killer and the reasons for the crime is non-personal in most cases. Serial killing is different from mass murder, where the victims are all killed at the same time.

The victims are currently undergoing treatment and are out of danger. An FIR has been registered at Indiranagar Police Station. Efforts are underway to nab the accused. Police have urged the public not to spread unverified information which can cause panic.
