NHRC notice to Karnataka over failed eye surgeries

 The national human rights watchdog has sought a report from the Karnataka government after seven senior citizens lost sight in one eye due to a botched cataract operations in a government hospital, a statement said on Monday. Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the chief secretary of the state, seeking a report within four weeks. The commission said the surgeries were done at a free government camp in Mandya district of the state on April 1, this year under the "National Swasthya Beema Yojana". A few days after the surgery, the patients started feeling severe itching, leading to swelling in the operated eye and gradual loss of vision, the commission said.With IANS
