Newborn girl dies after being dumped in garbage bin in Bengaluru

Written by : TNM Staff

A newborn girl died in Bengaluru soon after she was rescued from a garbage bin in the wee hours of Saturday.

Police said that doctors at the Vani Vilas Hospital declared the one-day-old infant brought dead.

The baby was rescued from the garbage pile in Bajaj Street near KR Market after one Shivakumar called the police hearing wails of the child. He found the baby kept in a cane basket at around 6:30 am, a senior police officer told The New India Express.

Locals also rushed to the spot after Shivashankar raised an alarm.

A Hoysala vehicle reporting to the distress call took the baby to the hospital but Shivashankar left the spot before police reached the spot. Police are yet to record his statement.

Police suspect that the baby was abandoned as it was a girl. Police are investigating CCTV footage of nearby areas to find out who abandoned the baby. Local hospitals have also been questioned about the incident.

“We suspect that the parents abandoned the baby because she was a girl,” the officer told TNIE.

In another incident in July, a newborn girl was left abandoned in Hassan district in a bush. Fortunately, she was later rescued and was out of danger post-treatment.

Like most parts of India, female children face discrimination and are less preferred than boys in Karnataka.

In the latest census in 2011, the child sex ratio (0-6 years) was found to be 918 girls for every 1000 boys, incidentally the lowest in 50 years. In Karnataka, the figures were better than the national average with 948 girls for every 1000 boys.
