The Karnataka government, in its plans to project Bengaluru on an international platform, has decided to provide free wifi access in public spaces across the city.Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given his nod to the project and the state government wants Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani to spearhead the initiative, states a report by Bangalore Mirror.Karnataka is said to be following in AAP’s footsteps which had promised free internet access in public areas in the national capital during the assembly election.Providing free internet access to the city is expected to cost Rs 150-200 crore.Legal advisor to Karnataka and AICC spokesperson Brijesh Kalappa told the newspaper, “If it can be done in Delhi, why not in Bengaluru? I met the chief minister and explained the project and he was excited. He immediately said yes and proposed Nandan Nilekani’s name to spearhead it. Since Bengaluru hosts a lot of IT companies, government can seek some help from them.”Several public spaces in Bengaluru, including the MG Road and Brigade road stretches and major bus terminals, already provide free wifi services to citizens.
