The News Minute| October 2, 2014| 10.30 am ISTAnswering the clarion call for Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar has announced he will use his MPLAD funds for installation of 100 hi-tech electronic toilets in 50 BBMP schools in Bangalore. The initiative has been launched with a pilot project installing four electronic toilets in two BBMP schools in Bangalore that has a large number of girl students from economically backward background.Rajeev Chandrasekhar said “it’s my commitment to ensure every child studying in a BBMP school has access to basic sanitation and will utilize my Local Area Development Funds to install electronic toilets.”What are Electronic Toilets? They are toilets, made of steel structure and have automated cleaning and flushing mechanisms. Being a self-cleaning toilet, the e toilets negate the need for everyday cleaning and ensure long term hygiene. On opening of the door of the e toilet, it automatically switches on a light—thus saving energy. It directs the person with audio commands- ensuring proper hygiene and these toilets are programmed to flush 1.5 liters of water after 3 minutes of usage or 4.5 liters if usage is longer thereby also conserving water. Most importantly they can also be programmed to clean the platform with a complete wash down after every 5 or 10 persons use the toilet and are all GPRS enabled that allows for real time updates and tracking for periodic maintenance
