Middlemen make hundreds of fake claims for crop loss, arrested

The News Minute | September 20, 2014 | 10.26 am ISTDistrict authorities in Koppal have received a few thousand applications claiming compensations for crop loss due to flooding, but most of them are fake, inquiries have revealed.According to a Kannada Prabha report, revenue official P S Manjunath discovered that there were dozens of fake applications for compensation. When compensation was first announced, the district administration had received around 200-300 applications. When the state government announced immediate compensation, applications began to pour in and so far, around 13,000 applications have been received. Becoming suspicious of the number of claims, the district administration decided to conduct inspections and found that in many cases there had been no crop damage, and that the claims were fraudulent.They discovered that middlemen had filed a number of fake applications with false information. A case has been filed and two people have been arrested.
