A Mangaluru-bound Jet Airways flight was forced to return to Bengaluru airport for an emergency landing soon after take-off on Wednesdaymorning, after smoke was reported in the cabin of the ATR aircraft.

All the passengers were promptly evacuated from the flight 9W 2839 and all the 64 passengers and four crew on board are reported to be safe, according to the airliner.

The official Twitter handle of the Kempegowda International Airport retweeted the Jet Airways statement and said that all persons on board the aircraft were safe.

After a full emergency was declared at KIAB for priority landing, the runway was closed from 10.20am to 10.50 pm. As a result, the landing of three arriving flights and takeoff of five departing flights were delayed, airport authorities said.

A further release from Jet Airways said that five passengers were taken to the airport medical room for first aid, while the others were shifted to the airport lounge. Passengers’ cabin and check-in luggage had also been returned to them.

The release also added that the aircraft had been shifted to a parking bay for inspection and that the DGCA had been informed of the incident and full co-operation would be extended to the authorities.
