A 49-year-old ex-serviceman attempted to jump onto the tracks at Jalahalli Metro station in Bengaluru on Monday, January 20 but was rescued by quick-thinking staff. The individual, identified as Anil Kumar Pandey, a former Air Force personnel from Bihar, is safe and uninjured, according to officials.
The incident occurred at approximately 10.25 am when Anil jumped onto the track as a train approached. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) staff immediately activated the Emergency Trip System (ETS), halting the train and allowing for his rescue.
Metro services on the Green Line were temporarily disrupted due to the incident. During the 25-minute disruption, trains operated on a reduced loop between Yeshwanthpur and Silk Institute Metro stations, instead of running up to Madavara. Full services on the Green Line resumed at 10.50 am, following the completion of the rescue operation.
On January 5, a 23-year-old youth from Kerala attempted suicide in a similar manner at the same station. He suffered grievous head injuries and burns on his chest. The train operations had come to a standstill for 48 minutes during the evening peak hours.
On New Year’s Day, a woman jumped onto the tracks to retrieve her fallen mobile phone and brought the Purple Line train operations to a halt during the evening peak hours.
On September 17, 2024, a 30-year-old man from Bihar attempted suicide by trying to come under the Metro train at Jnanabharathi Metro Station. The metro staff acted swiftly and used the Emergency Trip System (ETS) to rescue the man. No injuries were reported. However, the authorities quickly resumed services on the route after a brief interruption. On March 21, 2024, a man died by suicide at Attiguppe Metro Station.
