A 10-member gang of Congress workers, who were wielding machetes, allegedly attacked two Shri Ram Sene activists on Wednesday in Gadag.

The incident occurred in Gangimadi area of Gadag at around 3.00pm.

According to the Gadag SP, Shri Ram Sene District President, Raju Kanappa and Basavaraj Kutrtikoti were walking on the road when they were attacked.

“The gang led by Congress St Yuva Morcha President, Mahantesh Belthady attacked Raju and Basavaraj in broad daylight,” the SP added.

Raju sustained injuries to his head, neck, arms and back, while Basavaraj sustained minor injuries. The duo was taken to the government hospital in Hubballi, where they are undergoing treatment.

“Raju is undergoing a surgery and his condition is critical. His health status can be determined only after the procedure,” the SP added.

According to the police, Mahantesh Belthady and Raju were at war with each other for a long time.

“Raju’s relatives alleged that Mahatesh Belthady and his relatives Sureah and Arun Belthady had on many occasions entered their home and threatened Raju. They recently had an argument about Shivaji Day celebrations and the family members believe that the ongoing feud led the Belthady brothers to attack Raju and his aide,” the SP added.

The police have arrested Mahantesh Belthady, Arun Belthady, Suresh Belthady, Appaji, Girimitti Manja, Shankar and four others in the case.

A case of attempted murder has been filed against the 10 members.
