The Karnataka assembly on Friday passed a bill to split Bangalore University into three entities for improving its functioning."The bill was essential to amend the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000 to reform administration and governance of the Bangalore University and improve its academic quality by trifurcating it," Higher Education Minister RV Deshpande said before the bill's passage by voice vote.The bill, tabled during the session's first phase at Belagavi early this month, also empowers the state government to change the varsity's name to Bengaluru University."The new university, with campus at Jnanabharati (on the city's outskirts), will have jurisdiction over assembly segments of Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts and adjacent Ramangara district," Deshpande said.The other two universities - Bangalore Central University and Bangalore North University - will be set up as affiliating institutions, with the former having jurisdiction in some areas of Bengaluru Urban district and the latter over Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Chikkaballapur and Kolar.Bangalore Central will function from Bangalore Central College campus in the city centre, while Bangalore North University will be located at Jangamkote with camp office at Kolar post-graduate centre, Deshpande added.With IANS
