A Karnataka man has taken ICICI bank to court for not acknowledging his cheque written in Kannada.

Anand Diwakar Garag, a resident of Belagavi has approached the district consumer court citing lack of service for dishonouring his Corporation Bank cheque for Rs 17, 220 for his life insurance premium for LIC, according to The Times of India.

According to the report, ICICI Bank returned the cheque with a note which read “present with document".

The court has issued notices to ICCI bank, Corporation Bank and LIC (the insurer), and will hear the matter on February 28.

"My bank told me that the reason they dishonoured my cheque was because the details were filled in Kannada. Also, in another incident that occurred after this one, ICICI bank dishonoured a cheque I had given to a private firm," Garag told the newspaper.

Garag said that he had earlier paid his electricity bills with cheques written in Kannada.

According to a Mint report, customers can fill the details of a cheque in any scheduled regional language and sign the cheque in the same language as long as it matches with the sign in bank records.

The same report mentioned how former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan stressed on the usage of regional languages for increasing engagement between customers and bankers.
