Five days after Radhika, a trans woman, was forcibly separated from her husband, she is hopeful that they might be allowed to live together as a married couple.

Radhika (19) and Shivakumar (21) got married in Koppal town on June 21. Two days later, Shivakumar’s family arrived at Radhika’s house, where they were living, and forcibly took him away. Shivakumar was locked up his family since June 23, but managed to escape on Monday evening.

“We were to file a complaint with the Superintendent of Police on Tuesday, but we received a call from Shivakumar’s brother, who said that the family has agreed to let us live together. He said that Shivakumar had not changed his mind and only wanted to live with me,” Radhika told The News Minute.

Although her attempts to get the jurisdictional police to help her free him went in vain, Radhika says she will now wait as she hopes they have a chance to live their lives together.

The duo got married in her house in the Sadashivanagar area of Koppal town on June 21. The ceremony was performed by members of Radhika’s transgender family before the Santhoshi Maa deity.

Radhika says that his family knew about their relationship and that they only objected to the marriage as they wanted Shivakumar to have children.

Both belong to the Lambani community. Radhika was born male and underwent sex-change surgery slightly over a year ago.

Shortly after that, she met Shivakumar at the Koppal railway station where he is a tea seller. She would go there to collect money.
