Manjula, a homemaker from Raichur in Karnataka, recently discovered that she had 150 tumours in her intestine. She was suffering from a rare condition known as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS).  According to a report by The Times of India, doctors at BGS hospital removed the tumours from her intestines through a procedure called double balloon enteroscope where the tumours were passed through the food pipe and rectum. Around four big tumours are yet to be removed. There are chances of them growing back and so she must be kept under observation. Dr Ravindra BS, who conducted the procedure, told the TOI, "It was a challenging case. I have seen patients suffering from PJS, but for the first time we came across someone with more than 100 tumours." The condition runs in her family. Manjula’s brother also had 60 tumours but for him part of his small intestine had to removed. PJS is a genetic disorder seen only in 1 out of three lakh people. Lack of timely attention could cause these lumps to turn cancerous. Though unconfirmed, the prevalence of consanguine marriages in North Karnataka is said to be one of the causes for this rare disorder, adds the report.
