Karnataka will deploy 500 trained power utility workers and specialised equipment to Andhra Pradesh to help restore electricity infrastructure damaged by Cyclone Arnab, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Monday, November 2.
The deployment follows a request from the Andhra Pradesh government for manpower and equipment to carry out restoration work in cyclone-affected areas, where over 15,000 electricity poles have been uprooted.
Shivakumar said he had spoken to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and assured him of Karnataka’s full support. The Energy Department is coordinating the assistance under the supervision of Energy Minister K J George.
The state has mobilised 500 trained linemen, 15 Palfinger trucks equipped with cranes and earth augers, and 25 tractor-mounted drilling machines. The teams left for Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon and are expected to reach the State by midnight.
The linemen have been divided into teams of 10, each led by a junior or assistant engineer. An executive engineer from every operations and maintenance circle has also been assigned to supervise and coordinate the restoration work.
All electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) have appointed nodal officers to coordinate with the Andhra Pradesh authorities. Drivers and operators are accompanying the specialised vehicles and machinery to ensure their effective deployment at restoration sites.
The Karnataka government will also provide contingency funds to meet the travel, accommodation and other emergency expenses of the deployed personnel.
Shivakumar said Karnataka would continue to assess the situation over the next two days, particularly in view of the approaching Cyclone Murasu, and extend all possible assistance to the neighbouring State.
