In what is being touted as a first-of-its-kind case, the Lokayukta's judiciary wing on Tuesday conducted a departmental enquiry in an ambulance. A report by the Bangalore Mirror states that the Lokayukta recorded the statement of A A Nagur, an 81-year old retired primary school teacher, who is bed-ridden and could neither walk nor sit during the enquiry. Nagur, accompanied by his wife Shantha, came all the way from Hungund in Bagalkot district, which is around 520 km from Bengaluru, in the ambulance. The departmental enquiry by the Lokayukta was in connection to a complaint that Nagur had filed in 2008. In the complaint, he had stated that the block education officer (BEO) in Muddebihal had failed to implement a special pay which was observed by the accountant general (AG) to Nagur's salary, the report further states. "In special circumstances, when witnesses are unable to attend court, there is a provision to appoint a court commissioner who possesses the power of a judge. This commissioner may visit the complainants or witnesses and record their statement," additional registrar of enquiries (ARE - 11) - Suresh B Turamuri told the newpaper, adding that the Lokayukta will try to dispose the case as soon as possible.
