The News Minute | January 6, 2014 | 11.42 am ISTKarnataka’s caste census will be carried out by the state Backward Classes Commission from April 11, in what may be the first caste census to be proposed since Independence.According to a report in The Times of India there will be four questions on caste: name the caste, I don’t belong to any caste or I am caste-less, I don’t know my caste, I don’t want to disclose my caste. Given the nature of caste, the Commission will also ask people for their religion and record the response they give, irrespective of their responses to the question on caste. Read: How will Karnataka's caste census look at religion?According to a report in The Hindu, the Karnataka government had proposed a caste census under the Congress government as far back as 2005, and the union government had even sanctioned Rs 21.5 crore for it then. However, the proposal did not make much headway as successive governments were uninterested. As the Leader of the Opposition during the previous government when the BJP was in power, Siddaramaiah had often said that if the Congress came to power, it would ensure that the caste census was conducted. This exercise is separate from the central government’s Socio Economic And Caste Census 2011, which also connects socio-economic indicators to caste. The results of this enumeration are still in draft stage.Tweet
