It is now official – cinema tickets across Karnataka will not cost more than Rs 200.

More than a month after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision to cap cinema ticket prices as part of his Budget speech, the Karnataka government passed an order bringing this rule into effect.

According to the order, all theatres, including multiplexes, in the state must henceforth cap ticket prices at Rs 200. However, Gold Class, IMAX and 4DX theatres have been excluded from this price restriction.

The announcement came after a 14-member committee headed by SV Rajendra Singh Babu submitted a report to the Karnataka government in August last year, suggesting a cap on multiplex ticket prices at Rs 120.

The Committee had also recommended compulsory screenings of two shows of Kannada films during prime time, which was agreed to by the government.

"We studied the matter for nine months and gave our recommendations to the government a few months ago. It is heartening to see that the government has accepted our recommendations,” Committee Chairman, Rajendra Singh, had then told TNM.

On April 11, the CM announced that cap on ticket prices in multiplexes would come into effect from the month of May. In the days before the order issued, there was a minor furore on social media, as many complained of inflated prices for the blockbuster hit Baahubali: The Conclusion.
