‘Is it the apocalypse?’: Bengalureans hit out at Bescom as rains leave city in darkness

Written by : TNM Staff

It’s not just the nightmarish traffic that Bengalureans have to deal with these days. To add to their list of woes, rains- light or heavy- bring a host of problems including waterlogging, and power outages.

With heavy rains lashing Bengaluru on Saturday, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) received 3,014 complaints, reported Deccan Herald. Darkness engulfed many parts of the city with 43 electric poles falling and 39 trees getting uprooted in the squally winds that accompanied the heavy rains on Saturday.

While power was restored in some areas within an hour, residents in other neighbourhoods had to suffer a complete outage for a full 24 hours.

Several residents took to social media to vent their anger at the poor state of infrastructure in India’s IT hub. There were repeated complaints from people across the city, including RT Nagar, Koramangala, Mahadevapura, KR Puram, etc. about Bescom being unable to restore power.

"No power from past 23 hours in RT Nagar. Bescom had promised to restore by 14.30. but we are still waiting. No proper response from Bescom. Doesn't suit here in Bangalore," an aggrieved citizen wrote.

While most users used social media to complain about the power disruptions, some users also made it a point to remind Bescom of its own promises.

And while the complaints poured in, Bescom it appears had its hands full, with the power utility company not responding to calls. Many residents pointed out that the Bescom Helpline 1912 is either dysfunctional or perpetually busy.
