A 22-year-old MTech student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room, police said.

The student, identified as Gopal, was from West Bengal. According to police, the incident is suspected to have occurred on Wednesday night, August 19, and came to light on Thursday morning after police were alerted.

Police said they recovered a note from the hostel room. A preliminary investigation suggests that Gopal may have been facing relationship-related issues. Police are investigating further to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.

The IISc, in a statement, expressed grief over the student’s death on August 20 and offered condolences to his family and friends. “We are committed to ensuring that the IISc campus is a safe and inclusive space for everyone,” the institute said.

Gopal’s death comes two weeks after another IISc student, a 19-year-old BTech student, was found dead in his hostel room on August 6. Police had cited personal reasons in that case and registered a case of unnatural death.

The Sadashivanagar police are investigating the latest incident and examining the circumstances leading to Gopal’s death.
