The News Minute | February 19, 2015 | 12:41 pm IST Felling or burning may be common methods to get rid of trees, but two trees in Bengaluru's Chamundeshwari Layout were reportedly poisoned to death recently with mercury and sulphuric acid was also injected directly into their tissue. A report by Bangalore Mirror states that a foot-deep hole was drilled into the two Neolamarckia cadamba or Kadamba trees, to inject the chemicals into them over a period of few days after which the holes were sealed. The trees, which were around 12 to 15 years old, were also set to fire. A complaint has been filed and the honorary wildlife warden and city forest department have taken up a case of tree killing. Officials have collected the samples of the chemicals from the trees, which will be sent to the lab for testing, states the report. Since it is not easy to get permission to cut trees, they are often set on fire and killed. Though not common, four such incidents of poisoning trees is said to have been reported in Jayanagar recently. If prosecuted, those behind the incident can face severe punishment, adds BM.
